"With Soap Box Derby cars being used in over 300 schools in 13 states and in classrooms in Singapore, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, and Japan, the International Soap Box Derby continues its mission to develop and provide educational opportunities for K-12 youth worldwide.
Promoting the S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering, and math) initiative in education through gravity racing, the Gravity Racing Challenge (GRC) STEM Team program is designed to provide K-12 educators and students with meaningful, project- and standards-based, intercurricular learning opportunities. Educators are successfully implementing the GRC program in classrooms and after-school, summer or enrichment programs and clubs worldwide.
If you have questions about the race, please contact: Frankie Gilmore
It has been called
"The Greatest Amateur Racing Event in the World".
To most of the more than
a million youngsters who have participated in racing these gravity-powered cars since the
Derby's inception in 1934, it is just the "Soap Box Derby".
The Soap Box Derby is a youth racing program which has run nationally since 1934. World Championship finals are
held each July at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio.
- is a community event to bring family, business and community together
for a day of fun, exciting competition.
- a family project for kids 8 to 17 years of age.
- an opportunity for a child to build and race their own race
- a unique program that encourages close adult-youth activities while building and racing a car.
- reinforces the importance of setting and completing goals while developing
traits such as self-confidence, perseverance, craftsmanship, leadership and sportsmanship,
while building a gravity race car.
Ed Bednarczyk, a good friend, has helped us with our race, and in doing so
has become a great advocate for the Soap Box Derby. And now, he has helped organize the first ever Soap
Box Derby in Camano Island, Washington!! (just outside of Seattle, WA) We have helped him and his race
sponsor with start up info and are very excited for their first race! Their race is also June 18th,
so we will be setting up a phone call from our race to theirs that day, and having both on the loud
speaker. We are very proud of our Sister City.
